London dining: El Camion, Soho

Friday night was Mexican night. My friend and I decided to check out the Soho scene and picked El Camion after a fair amount of research and menu comparing! I have to admit it wasn’t our first preference, but we could reserve a table there, unlike at a number of other places in the area. The website gave off a friendly and relaxed vibe, and we were looking forward to a good night out. First things first, first impressions. The place looks brighter and cheerier and more spacious in the photographs than it really is. The seating was a little bit of a squeeze. The upside of that though is that it’s a cozy dining experience. I loved the colourful tables and the quick and attentive service. And their signature wall that had shelves displaying every imaginable chilli sauce running the length of it. Attractive, quirky touch!

Tortilla chips & guacamole

The guacamole was excellent, and the tortilla chips thin and crisp. Great to share. My cadillac Martini was good, but expensive for what it was. The chicken tinga tostadas were delicious - packed with flavour and generous toppings. I didn’t know what tinga was last night, but I’ve just learned that it’s shredded chicken with chipotle sauce, and that chipotle is a Mexican chilli. What I enjoyed the most, however, were the mushroom and spinach quesadillas. Simple, no fuss, and tasty. Squeeze a little spicy Habanero sauce on them, and they’re even better.

Overall, I thought El Camion was fun and funky with plenty of character. Food was reasonably priced too. The cocktails could have been cheaper though, or more dressed up. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!
